The Scottish fur trader whose summer estate became a global academic powerhouse
In short: James McGill was a titan of the 18th-century North American fur trade who built a massive fortune in Montreal. Though he was a prominent slaveholder and politician, his most enduring legacy is the bequest of his summer home and £10,000 that founded one of Canada's most prestigious universities.
Born in Glasgow in 1744, James McGill arrived in Montreal by 1766, shortly after the British conquest of New France. He quickly established himself as a dominant force in the fur trade, eventually becoming the largest investor in the industry within Lower Canada. By 1782, his investments reached 26,000 Pound Sterling, a staggering sum for the era. His business acumen, particularly through his partnership with Isaac Todd, helped lay the groundwork for the North West Company, a pivotal entity in the expansion of trade across the Northwest.
Beyond commerce, McGill was deeply embedded in the political and social fabric of Montreal. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada and was a member of the Executive Council. His personal life was marked by his marriage to Marie-Charlotte, a widow from a prominent French-Canadian family, and his role as a stepfather to her children. He lived in a grand home on Notre-Dame Street and later acquired a summer property called Burnside, named for the small stream that ran through the land. This estate, which featured orchards and cattle-grazing, would eventually become the site of his most significant contribution to history.
McGill died suddenly in 1813, leaving an estate valued at over £100,000. While his contemporaries noted he was likely the richest man in Montreal, his will directed a portion of his wealth toward the Royal Institution for the Advancement of Learning. This bequest funded the creation of McGill University and supported the development of several other institutions, including the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria. Today, his remains rest on the university campus, a permanent link between the Scottish merchant and the academic institution that bears his name.
