How a Remarkable Checklist Saved Flight 1549 and Transformed Modern Aviation Safety Standards
In short: When US Airways Flight 1549 lost both engines over the Hudson River, the survival of everyone on board depended on a perfectly executed emergency protocol. First Officer Jeffrey Skiles managed a complex, high-pressure checklist in under three minutes, a feat investigators later found nearly impossible to replicate in flight simulations.
On January 15, 2009, Jeffrey Skiles served as first officer alongside Captain Chesley Sullenberger during the emergency landing of Flight 1549. While Sullenberger focused on piloting the aircraft toward the Hudson River, Skiles was responsible for executing the engine restart checklist. Author Atul Gawande highlighted this division of labor as essential, noting that the first officer's ability to manage critical tasks under extreme time constraints was remarkable. The NTSB later determined the accident was caused by bird ingestion into both engines.
Following the incident, Skiles became a prominent advocate for organizational reform. As Vice President of the Coalition of Airline Pilots Associations, he played a key role in the Airline Safety Act of 2010. This legislation significantly raised training and experience requirements for first officers on US-registered airliners. His advocacy work, often conducted in partnership with families of air disaster victims, aimed to ensure that the rigorous standards applied to flight crews would prevent future tragedies.
Beyond his legislative efforts, Skiles maintained a long career in aviation, eventually captaining Boeing 787 Dreamliners for American Airlines before retiring in 2024. He also dedicated time to the Experimental Aircraft Association's Young Eagles program, which has provided over 2.2 million free flights to young people. Skiles, who began flying at age sixteen, has also contributed over 100 articles on aviation safety to various publications, cementing his legacy as both a pilot and a persistent voice for industry-wide safety improvements.
