The barrister who broke from the DUP to found the TUV
In short: Jim Allister has spent decades navigating the volatile landscape of Northern Irish politics. From serving as a European Parliament member to leading the Traditional Unionist Voice, his career is defined by fierce unionism and a refusal to compromise on the core principles of his movement.
Born in 1953 in Listooder, County Down, Jim Allister’s political journey is deeply intertwined with the history of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). He was a member of the party from its inception in 1971, even serving as a European Parliament assistant to Ian Paisley between 1980 and 1982. During his time in the European Parliament, he was noted for his high level of activity, outperforming fellow Northern Irish MEPs in parliamentary debates and questions.
However, Allister's uncompromising stance has frequently led to political ruptures. In 1987, he left active politics following a disagreement with Paisley regarding a voting pact with the Ulster Unionist Party. He returned to the political fray in 2004, topping the poll for the DUP in the Northern Ireland European Parliament election with 175,000 first-preference votes. Yet, in 2007, he resigned from the DUP for the second time, triggered by the party's decision to enter a power-sharing government with Sinn Féin.
Following his resignation, Allister founded the Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV) on 7 December 2007. His legal background as a barrister, specializing in criminal law and called to the Inner Bar as Queen's Counsel in 2001, has informed his political identity. In the 2024 general election, he secured a seat in the House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for North Antrim, continuing a long career that includes service in both the Northern Ireland Assembly and the European Parliament.
