From a neighborhood kid to Spain's all-time leading goalscorer
In short: Jenni Hermoso didn't just find her place in football; she redefined it. By shifting from a midfielder to a false 9, she became a prolific scoring machine, eventually becoming the first Spanish player to lead the UEFA Women's Champions League in scoring.
Hermoso's journey began in Carabanchel, a working-class neighborhood in southern Madrid. At twelve years old, her father and grandfather—the latter an ex-Atlético Madrid keeper—urged her to enter the club's junior squads, having spent her youth competing in seven-a-side football and futsal, frequently alongside male peers. She made her senior debut in the Segunda División at just 14 years old, scoring in her very first match on December 5, 2004.
Her career is marked by significant tactical evolution. While she initially played as an attacking midfielder, her move to FC Barcelona in 2014 saw her transition to a 'false 9' role. This shift unlocked her scoring potential, leading her to win five Pichichi trophies—the record for the most in the Spanish league. By 2021's conclusion, her supremacy was evident as she secured the title of most prolific female goalscorer globally for that year, netting 51 goals.
Hermoso has navigated various clubs and continents, including a stint with Rayo Vallecano, a move to Sweden's Tyresö FF, and a season with Paris Saint-Germain. Despite being 'homesick' during her time in France, she returned to Spain to lead Atlético Madrid to a league title. She eventually returned to Barcelona, where she surpassed Sonia Bermúdez to become the club's all-time top scorer, reaching 124 goals by December 5, 2020. Her legacy is cemented by a continental treble in the 2020–21 season and a Silver Ball at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
