In short: Born in London and raised in Montréal, Joanna Pettet transitioned from Broadway stages to iconic film roles. From playing Mata Bond in a James Bond spoof to surviving a desert accident, her career spanned decades of television and cinema, marked by both significant successes and a sudden retirement.

Joanna Jane Pettet, born on 16 November 1942, had a life shaped by movement and transformation. After spending her early childhood in Chelsea, London, she relocated to Montréal following her mother's remarriage. It was there that she assumed the surname of her stepfather, Pettet. Her path to stardom began in New York City, where she studied acting at the Lincoln Center and the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre under Sanford Meisner.

Pettet's professional ascent was rapid. She made her Broadway debut at age 19 in 'Take Her, She's Mine' (1961–1962) and later earned a Theatre World Award for her performance in 'Poor Richard' (1964–1965). Her performance in the 1966 movie 'The Group' ignited a busy acting career, featuring parts in 'The Night of the Generals' (1967) and her portrayal of Mata Bond in the 1967 James Bond parody 'Casino Royale'.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Pettet became a familiar face in both cult horror films and television anthologies like 'Night Gallery' and 'Tales of the Unexpected'. Her television work was extensive, including a recurring role as detective Janet Baines on 'Knots Landing' in 1983. Despite her visibility, she retired from the screen in 1991 following her final role in the thriller 'Terror in Paradise', while still in her 40s.

Her personal life was equally eventful, including a romantic relationship with Terence Stamp that resulted in her only child, Damien Zachary Cord. In a notable moment of generosity, actor Alan Bates bequeathed her £95,000 in December 2003. Pettet passed away on 7 July 2026 at Temecula Valley Hospital in California, 31 years after the death of her son.
