From Tripura's royal lineage to the governorship of Maharashtra
In short: Born into the Tripura royal family, Jishnu Dev Varma has navigated a complex path through Indian politics. From serving as a Deputy Chief Minister to leading the Badminton Association of India, his career spans regional governance, legislative battles, and high-level constitutional appointments across several Indian states.
Jishnu Dev Varma's political trajectory is deeply rooted in his heritage. Born in Agartala, Tripura, on 15 August 1957, he is a member of the Tripura royal family. Serving Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya, his father, Ramendra Kishore Debbarma, acted as both home and military secretary. This lineage provides a unique backdrop to a political career that saw him join the Bharatiya Janata Party in the early 1990s during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, eventually becoming a national general secretary for the party in 1993.
His legislative experience includes serving as the MLA for Charilam from 2018 to 2023. During the 2018 Tripura Legislative Assembly election, he secured his seat with a significant margin, receiving 89% of the 29,753 valid votes polled. This victory led to his appointment as the 3rd Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura, where he managed diverse portfolios including Finance, Power, and Rural Development. However, his tenure in the state legislature ended following the 2023 Tripura Legislative Assembly election, where he lost his seat to Subodh Deb Barma of the Tipra Motha Party.
In recent years, Varma has moved into prominent constitutional roles. Appointed by President Droupadi Murmu, he served as the Governor of Telangana from 31 July 2024 until 2026. His political ascent continued on 6 March 2026, when he was appointed Governor of Maharashtra, assuming office on 10 March 2026. Beyond politics, he has been an active figure in sports leadership, having served as the head of the Badminton Association of India and president of its Tripura unit.
