The American messiah who promises to return with planeloads of cargo
In short: On the remote island of Tanna, a mysterious figure named John Frum is worshipped as a ghostly American serviceman. His followers believe that by rejecting Western modernity and embracing tradition, they can summon a tidal wave of wealth, from Coca-Cola to heavy machinery, back to their shores.
The John Frum movement is a classic 'cargo cult' that emerged in the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu) no later than the late 1930s. The movement's identity was profoundly shaped by the arrival of 50,000 American troops during World War II. As these soldiers brought an unprecedented influx of supplies—known locally as 'cargo'—the Ni-Vanuatu people, including 10,000 men serving in the Vanuatu Labor Corps, witnessed a sudden descent of material wealth. This led to the belief that such goods could be summoned through spiritual means.
The figure of John Frum has various origins. Some accounts suggest he was a spirit vision induced by kava, a psychoactive plant, or a manifestation of the god Keraperamun. Other stories describe a man named Manehivi using the alias 'John Frum' to promise the return of riches. Some even interpret the name as a corruption of 'John from America.' To ensure his return, followers were encouraged to reject European influences like money, Western education, and Christianity, returning instead to traditional 'karrast' or customs.
The movement's history is marked by both devotion and resistance. In 1941, followers abandoned missionary churches and plantations to live in traditional ways. In 1957, the 'Tanna Army' even organized military-style parades with bamboo rifles and 'USA' markings, leading to arrests by colonial authorities. While the movement's numbers have declined from over 5,000 in the 1990s to fewer than 500 by 2022, the faith remains centered in the village of Lamakara, where devotees still celebrate 'John Frum Day' every February 15.
