How a Basque journeyman manager conquered Europe after decades of domestic struggle
In short: Born in Zaldibar, José Luis Mendilibar spent years managing modest Spanish clubs before achieving late-career international glory. Known as The General, he transformed from a La Liga survival specialist into a historic European champion, proving that tactical persistence can eventually yield silverware even after a lifetime of near-misses and dismissals.
José Luis Mendilibar Etxebarria, born in 1961, began his football life as a midfielder who never reached the top flight, spending most of his playing career with Sestao. His transition to management was equally humble, starting in youth categories and smaller clubs like Aurrerá de Vitoria and Lanzarote. Even when he reached La Liga, his path was defined by volatility; he was the first manager sacked in the 2005–06 season at Athletic Bilbao and faced multiple dismissals at clubs like Valladolid, Osasuna, and Levante.
Despite these setbacks, Mendilibar developed a reputation for resilience. His most significant domestic success came at Real Valladolid, where he secured promotion in 2007 with a record-breaking 88 points and a 29-game unbeaten run. Later, at Eibar, he achieved club records for league finishes and shared the Miguel Muñoz Trophy for best manager in 2017. However, it was his appointment at Sevilla in March 2023 that shifted his trajectory. Tasked with stabilizing a struggling side, he led them to a Europa League title, defeating Manchester United and eventually Roma in a penalty shootout.
The pinnacle of his career arrived in 2024 when he took charge of Olympiacos in Greece. Mendilibar orchestrated a historic run, guiding the Piraeus-based club to their first-ever European title by winning the UEFA Conference League. This achievement marked the first time a Greek team reached a continental final since 1971. He followed this by securing the Super League Greece title and the Greek Football Cup in 2025, cementing his legacy as a transformative figure. Though he was eventually sacked in September 2026, his tenure remains a rare example of a manager finding his greatest success in the twilight of his career.
