In short: Joseph diGenova’s career trajectory is a study in legal extremes. He moved from leading high-profile federal prosecutions against spies and corrupt officials to becoming a prominent figure in the world of political conspiracy theories and election-related litigation.

Born in 1945, diGenova established a formidable legal pedigree early in his career. Between 1983 and 1988, he acted as the District of Columbia's United States Attorney, famously overseeing the case against Jonathan Pollard, who admitted in 1987 to Israeli espionage. Furthermore, he directed inquiries regarding graft inside the D.C. government. Mayor Marion Barry, resulting in the convictions of 12 officials, including two deputy mayors.

In the 1990s, diGenova transitioned into roles as an Independent Counsel and Special Counsel. He investigated the 1992 preelection search of Bill Clinton's passport files—concluding the search was 'stupid, dumb and partisan' but not illegal—and was tasked with investigating the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. However, his public profile shifted significantly in the late 2010s as he became a frequent commentator on Fox News, often accusing the FBI of 'framing' Donald Trump and describing special counsel teams as 'legal terrorists.'

His recent work has been characterized by high-stakes political involvement and controversy. In 2019, he and his wife, Victoria Toensing, represented Ukrainian oligarch Dmitry Firtash, an associate of Russian organized crime, while simultaneously working with Rudy Giuliani on 'off the books' opposition research against Joe Biden. Following the 2020 election, diGenova joined a legal team to challenge the results, during which he faced a civil lawsuit from former CISA Director Chris Krebs for making violent threats. In 2026, he was briefly selected by the DOJ to lead an inquiry into federal officials' investigations of Trump before resigning in September of that year.
