In short: The José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum, affectionately known as the Choliseo, is the largest indoor arena in Puerto Rico. Since its 2004 opening, this San Juan venue has become a global powerhouse for ticket sales, hosting massive residencies and record-breaking concerts despite a turbulent history of political debate and structural challenges.

Conceived during the 1990s as part of a bid to host the 2004 Olympic Games, the project faced significant hurdles. Construction began in 1998 in the Milla de Oro district, but the project stalled between 2001 and 2002. Governor Sila María Calderón reported that only 42% of the facility was complete despite $242 million in spending. Delays were exacerbated by the discovery of a nearby water pumping station on unstable ground, necessitating foundation repairs. The arena finally opened in 2004 at a total cost exceeding $300 million.

The naming process was equally contentious. Legislators debated honoring various celebrities before selecting the late comedian José Miguel Agrelot. This choice bypassed a law prohibiting naming public facilities after living individuals, as Agrelot passed away in 2004, the same year the venue opened. Today, the arena is managed by ASM Global and remains a critical cultural hub. It has weathered significant disruptions, including closures following Hurricane Maria in 2017 and during the COVID-19 pandemic, yet it continues to set attendance records, such as the 18,749 spectators at a 2022 Bad Bunny concert.

Modern operations prioritize safety and maintenance. A 2010 audit revealed construction defects like cracks and exposed steel, which the Puerto Rico Convention District Authority reported were addressed. By 2025, the venue implemented an advanced monitoring system using digital accelerometers to track structural behavior in real time. With over 10 million visitors recorded by 2022, the Choliseo remains a vital economic and entertainment engine, recently securing hosting duties for the 2026 Miss Universe pageant.
