In short: Tucked into the northwestern corner of China, the Junggar Basin is an immense, arid depression ringed by towering mountain ranges. While its center is a desert, the basin acts as a massive internal drainage system, trapping water from surrounding peaks into saline marshes and isolated lakes far from the ocean.

Located in the Uygur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang, the Junggar Basin is a vast sedimentary depression bounded by the Mongolian Altai Mountains to the north and the Tien Shan to the south. It is defined by its extreme isolation; it holds the record for the land location most distant from any open sea, sitting 2,648 kilometers away from the nearest coastline. This geographic seclusion is reinforced by the surrounding mountain ranges, including the Dzungarian Alatau and the Borohoro mountains, which create a formidable barrier against moisture-bearing winds.

The basin floor sits at an elevation between 1,650 and 3,300 feet, sloping generally toward the southwest. Because it is an area of internal drainage, the few rivers that traverse the region do not reach the ocean. Instead, they feed into inland bodies of water like Lake Manasi and Lake Aibi. The climate is harsh and dry, receiving only 6 to 12 inches of annual precipitation. While the central Dzungarian Gobi is desert, the surrounding slopes support zones of steppe and semisteppe, providing a fragile environment for the local population of Uighurs and Turkic or Mongol peoples.

Beyond its surface geography, the basin is a significant geological reservoir. It developed as a series of foreland basins from the Permian period onward, accumulating thousands of meters of sedimentary layers. This complex history, shaped by tectonic events and ancient volcanism, has left the region rich in natural resources, including petroleum, coal, and various ore deposits. Today, the basin remains a place of stark contrasts, where industrial activity on southern oases and state farms exists alongside vast, sparsely populated stretches of desert and saline marshland.
