The Da Hinggan Range is a massive, tilted fault block shaping Northeast China's climate.
In short: Spanning 750 miles, this mountain system acts as a critical divide between the arid Mongolian Plateau and the lush Northeast Plain. Formed millions of years ago, these rounded mountains dictate weather patterns, harbor vast forests, and serve as a vital watershed for the Amur and Songhua river systems.
The Da Hinggan Range, or Greater Khingan, is a major mountain system in China's Inner Mongolia region. Geologically, it is a tilted fault block that emerged during the Jurassic era, between roughly 200 and 145 million years ago. Its structure is markedly asymmetrical: the eastern side features a sharp, dissected fault line facing the Northeast Plain, while the western side slopes gently toward the high Mongolian Plateau.
These mountains serve as a significant climatic barrier. The eastern slopes capture moisture from southeasterly winds, fostering a relatively wet environment that contrasts with the dry lands to the west. The northern reaches are particularly harsh, holding the coldest temperatures in eastern China and extensive permafrost. As one moves south, the climate warms, and the landscape shifts from dense coniferous forests to broad-leaved trees and expansive grasslands.
Beyond its physical geography, the range is a critical ecological and economic zone. It acts as a watershed for major river systems, including the Amur, Nen, and Sungari. The region is home to diverse wildlife and indigenous groups like the Orochon and Evenk. Historically isolated, the area saw significant industrial development in the 20th century through the construction of railways designed to facilitate lumber extraction, an activity that remains central to the local economy today.
The region's vulnerability was highlighted in May 1987, when a catastrophic wildfire, known as the Black Dragon Fire, consumed approximately 4,000 square miles of timber. Despite such challenges, the range remains a defining feature of the landscape, separating distinct ecological zones and influencing the lives of those inhabiting its slopes.
