In short: Kaʻiana was a towering Hawaiian noble who navigated global waters long before most of his contemporaries. From the Pacific Northwest to the ports of China, he experienced the world beyond the islands, only to return home and become a pivotal, tragic figure in the unification of the Hawaiian kingdom.

Born around 1755, Kaʻiana was an aliʻi of Puna with deep royal connections across the Hawaiian Islands. Standing nearly six feet five inches tall, he possessed a commanding presence that drew the attention of early European explorers. His life was defined by a restless ambition and a willingness to engage with the outside world. In 1787, he departed Hawaii on the ship Nootka, traveling to Canton and Macau, where he navigated foreign cultures and even cared for a fellow Hawaiian traveler who had fallen ill.

Upon his return to Hawaii in 1788, Kaʻiana became a key ally to Kamehameha I. He leveraged his international experience to help secure Western firearms and ammunition, which were instrumental in Kamehameha’s military campaigns. For a time, he served as a district chief, though his relationship with the growing kingdom was fraught with tension. British explorer George Vancouver later described him and his brothers as restless and treacherous, reflecting the volatile political landscape of the era as various chiefs vied for control.

The final chapter of Kaʻiana’s life unfolded during the 1795 conquest of Oahu. Feeling marginalized by Kamehameha’s war council, Kaʻiana and his brother Nāhiʻōleʻa defected to the side of Kalanikūpule, the ruler of Oahu and Maui. This choice proved fatal. Both brothers were killed at the Battle of Nuʻuanu in 1795, marking the end of a life that had spanned from the royal courts of Hawaii to the distant coasts of North America and the bustling markets of southern China.
