The king penguin: a vibrant, subantarctic survivor with a complex social life
In short: Standing tall with a dignified posture, the king penguin is the second largest penguin species. While they may resemble the emperor penguin, their vivid orange markings and unique breeding cycles set them apart in the harsh, icy reaches of the Southern Ocean.
King penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) inhabit various Antarctic and subantarctic islands, including South Georgia, the Falkland Islands, and the Crozet Islands. While some ornithologists view the species as monotypic, others recognize two subspecies: A. patagonicus patagonicus and A. patagonicus halli. These birds are characterized by striking coloration, featuring white chests, black backs, and vivid orange ear patches and teardrop-shaped bill markings.
Their reproductive strategy is remarkably intense. Most populations breed twice every three years, though some produce offspring every other year. Breeding occurs in dense colonies along flat shorelines. To attract a mate, males perform an 'ecstatic display,' involving trumpet calls and stretching their heads upward. Once paired, they are monogamous for the remainder of the breeding season. The female lays a single egg, which the parents protect by resting it on their feet under a vascularized brood patch.
The survival of a chick is a high-stakes endeavor. After hatching—roughly 54 days after laying—the chick is covered in dark brown down. It remains dependent on its parents for up to 313 days during a long fledging period, often going 3 to 5 months between feedings. During these gaps, chicks huddle in groups called crèches for protection. While they reach sexual maturity around six years old, some individuals can breed as early as four. In the wild, these birds can live up to 26 years, though they can reach 41 years in captivity.
