The shifting alliances of a jungle militia seeking a sovereign republic
In short: In the rugged highlands of northern Myanmar, the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) has spent decades navigating a complex web of survival. To secure their homeland, they have frequently pivoted between being enemies and allies of neighboring communist rebels and the central government, all while fighting for a republic of their own.
The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) serves as the military wing of the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), representing a coalition of six tribes in northern Myanmar. Their primary goal is the establishment of an independent Kachin republic. The group is funded through regional taxes and the trade of valuable resources, including jade, timber, and gold. While they utilize a mix of AK-47s and locally manufactured rifles like the KA-09, they also produce their own self-neutralizing landmines with an estimated three-year lifespan.
The KIA's history is marked by volatile shifts in strategy. In the late 1960s and 1970s, the group faced a dilemma regarding the Communist Party of Burma (CPB). While some leaders, like Zau Tu, initially sought to align with communist doctrine, the KIA's base remained rooted in racial and religious beliefs rather than ideology. This led to internal fractures; in 1968, a group of 120 followers seceded to join the CPB, and the KIA subsequently engaged in both cooperation and violent clashes with them.
To survive against the Tatmadaw (Myanmar military), the KIA has often employed a 'revolving door' of alliances. When the CPB threatened their territory, the KIA would seek temporary truces or even formal agreements with the Tatmadaw to gain a respite from the rebels. This forced them into a precarious position where they had to alternate between viewing the government and the CPB as allies and opponents depending on who posed the more immediate threat to their sovereignty.
