In short: Before he became a titan of Hindi cinema, Kader Khan was a professor of civil engineering in Mumbai. His transition from academia to the silver screen began with a chance encounter in a college play, eventually leading to a prolific career spanning over 300 films as an actor and screenwriter.

Born in Kabul in 1937, Kader Khan was raised in Mumbai's Kamathipura neighborhood. He balanced a rigorous academic life with a passion for theater, eventually teaching applied mathematics and mechanics at the M. H. Saboo Siddik College of Engineering. His breakthrough occurred when comedian Agha witnessed his performance in a college play and recommended him to Dilip Kumar. This led to his 1973 acting debut in the film Daag, marking the start of a career that would define decades of Indian cinema.

Khan was a rare creative force who bridged the intense rivalry between major directors Manmohan Desai and Prakash Mehra, writing iconic dialogues for both. His ability to adapt South Indian films for Hindi-speaking audiences was legendary; he did not merely translate scripts but transposed them into new cultural contexts. Beyond his work as a screenwriter for over 250 films, he evolved into a versatile actor, moving from supporting roles to leading comedic parts in hits like Coolie No. 1 and Aankhen.

His intellectual pursuits continued throughout his fame, including earning a master’s degree in Arabic literature from Osmania University. In his later years, Khan moved to Canada for health reasons, where he eventually passed away in 2018. Posthumously, he was honored with the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2019, cementing his legacy as a multifaceted contributor to both the arts and the cultural landscape of the Indian diaspora.
