In short: Arthur Stilwell founded the Kansas City Southern Railway in 1887 to create a direct north-south trade artery. By connecting Kansas City to Gulf ports, he bypassed the longer routes to the Atlantic. This strategic vision eventually transformed the company into a vital international bridge between the United States and Mexico.

The Kansas City Southern Railway (KCS) was established in 1887 by Arthur Stilwell, who aimed to provide the fastest rail connection between Kansas City and the Gulf of Mexico. At just 800 miles, this route was significantly shorter than the 1,400-mile journey to Atlantic ports. The railway expanded through the late 19th century, incorporating various lines like the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad to reach Shreveport, Louisiana, and Port Arthur, Texas. By 1914, the company had consolidated numerous smaller rail entities into a unified system.

A major strategic shift occurred in 1995 under CEO Michael Haverty, who envisioned connecting the Chicago corridor to Mexico. This led to the acquisition of a stake in the Texas Mexican Railway and, in 1996, the winning of a concession to operate the Northeast Railroad in Mexico. This system, later known as Kansas City Southern de México (KCSM), provided access to key Mexican industrial hubs and ports, including the Pacific port of Lázaro Cárdenas. The railway became a critical link for international trade, hauling goods across sectors ranging from automotive to energy.

The company's independence ended in the 21st century. After a competitive bidding process involving the Canadian National Railway, the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) purchased KCS for US$31 billion. Following regulatory approval from the Surface Transportation Board, the merger was finalized on April 14, 2023. Today, the combined entity operates as Canadian Pacific Kansas City, maintaining the legacy of Stilwell’s original vision for a seamless, cross-border rail network that spans from the American Midwest deep into the heart of Mexico.
