In short: Rising above the Philippine island of Negros, Kanlaon is an active andesitic stratovolcano defined by its complex summit and frequent, unpredictable phreatic explosions. While it is a popular destination for hikers, its history of sudden eruptions serves as a stark reminder of the volatile forces shaping the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Kanlaon, also known as Mount Kanlaon, stands as the highest point on the island of Negros and the tallest peak in the Visayas region. This massive stratovolcano is characterized by a 2-km-wide northern caldera and the active Lugud crater, which has been the primary source of eruptive activity in recent decades. The volcano is part of the Negros volcanic belt, a product of the subduction of the Sulu Sea basin lithosphere along the Negros Trench, a process that has been active since the Miocene.

Eruptions at Kanlaon are typically phreatic, meaning they are steam-driven explosions that produce ash plumes and minor local ashfall. These events are often preceded by seismic swarms, which scientists at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) monitor closely to determine alert levels. For instance, in December 2017, a low-energy phreatic explosion was preceded by a significant surge in volcanic earthquakes, with counts peaking at over 1,200 events in a single day. This activity can be erratic; periods of intense seismicity sometimes occur without visible surface degassing, making the volcano's behavior difficult to predict.

The inherent danger of the volcano is managed through a 4-km-radius Permanent Danger Zone, where public access is strictly restricted. Despite these precautions, the mountain remains a site of both geological study and human tragedy. The name Kanlaon itself honors Laon, a pre-colonial Visayan goddess of creation and agriculture, reflecting the deep cultural significance of the peak. Today, the volcano remains under constant surveillance by PHIVOLCS, which uses seismic networks and gas emission monitoring to track the shifting status of this ancient, restless giant.
