From high-stakes courtroom battles to controversial policy, the multifaceted career of Kapil Sibal
In short: Kapil Sibal is a prominent Indian lawyer and politician whose career spans decades of legal practice and government service. From defending high-profile impeachment cases to leading ministries, his tenure has been marked by significant policy shifts, public controversies, and a surprising foray into the world of creative arts.
Born in 1948 in Jalandhar, Kapil Sibal followed in the footsteps of his father, Hira Lal Sibal, a renowned advocate. After earning degrees from St. Stephen's College and the University of Delhi, he furthered his legal education at Harvard Law School. Sibal joined the bar in 1972 and was designated a Senior Lawyer by the High Court of Delhi in 1983. His legal expertise led to his appointment as Additional Solicitor General of India in 1989, and he has served as President of the Supreme Court Bar Association on four separate occasions, most recently in 2024–2025.
Sibal’s political life began in earnest in 1998 when he entered the Rajya Sabha. As a member of the Indian National Congress, he held various ministerial portfolios under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. His time in office was often contentious; he faced public outcry for his comments regarding the 2G spectrum case and drew criticism for attempts to regulate internet content. His initiatives in education, such as the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation system, and his ambitious, albeit troubled, project to provide affordable tablets to students, further defined his complex public legacy.
Beyond politics and law, Sibal has cultivated a creative side, publishing an anthology of poems titled I Witness: Partial Observation in 2008. His lyrics have been set to music by A. R. Rahman and featured in Hindi cinema. Despite his high-profile career, he has faced significant scrutiny, including criticism for his arguments in the Supreme Court regarding triple talaq and his remarks on the state of the nation. In 2022, he resigned from the Congress party to serve as an independent Member of Parliament, backed by the Samajwadi Party.
