The last survivors of an ancient Siberian nomadic lineage
In short: The Ket people are the sole remaining descendants of a nomadic civilization that once dominated central and southern Siberia. Today, fewer than 1,100 remain, carrying a language and genetic legacy that links them to both the Altai Mountains and the first peoples of the Americas.
The Ket are the final survivors of an ancient nomadic group that inhabited the vast Siberian interior. While they currently reside in the Turukhansky district of the Krasnoyarsk Krai, their roots are significantly further south. Genetic and linguistic studies suggest they originated near the Altai Mountains or Lake Baikal. This heritage is so distinct that the 'Ket' component of ancestry is found at high levels in several Turkic-speaking populations in the Altai region, where Yeniseian-speaking peoples were pushed north centuries ago.
The Ket are part of a profound linguistic and genetic mystery. The Yeniseian family's final remaining tongue is Ket. It has been linked to the Na-Dene languages of North America—including Navajo—forming the Dené–Yeniseian language family, though this remains a subject of scholarly debate. Genetically, the Ket share a unique profile with Native Americans, specifically showing high levels of Ancient North Eurasian (ANE) ancestry. This connection suggests a shared history that predates the arrival of more recent Beringian populations.
The Ket's history is marked by a tragic transition from nomadic independence to state assimilation. During the 1600s, the Russian state absorbed them, who previously functioned as exogamous kinship units under a rigid patriarchy. Forced deportations and the Soviet policy of collectivization in the 1930s-1950s disrupted their traditional way of life. By the 19th century, many could no longer sustain themselves without state aid. Today, while their shamanistic traditions and unique mythology—including the 'earth-diver' motif—persist in memory, the Ket face a critical crisis of cultural and linguistic erosion.
