In short: In a sport defined by high-velocity chaos, Kevin Gausman achieved a rare feat of perfection: striking out three batters in a single inning using only nine pitches. This feat, known as an immaculate inning, is a masterclass in efficiency and command that few professional athletes ever replicate.

Kevin Gausman first demonstrated his elite potential at Grandview High School in Aurora, Colorado, before becoming an All-American at Louisiana State University (LSU). His collegiate career was marked by dominance; in 2012, he led the Southeastern Conference in wins (12–2) and strikeouts (135). However, his journey was not linear. After being drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2012, he spent years navigating the complexities of the Major Leagues, moving through various roles and teams, including the Braves, Reds, Giants, and Blue Jays.

Gausman's career is punctuated by moments of extreme statistical variance. In 2019, he struggled with a career-high 6.19 ERA with the Braves, leading to a move to the Cincinnati Reds where he transitioned into a relief role. He briefly found his footing again with the San Francisco Giants, where he enjoyed a bounce-back 2020 season, posting a career-low 1.106 WHIP and a career-high 11.9 K/9. These fluctuations highlight the volatile nature of professional pitching, where a single injury or mechanical shift can redefine a career trajectory.

Despite these hurdles, Gausman has reached the pinnacle of pitching precision. On April 23, 2018, while playing for the Orioles, he threw the 90th immaculate inning in MLB history. He later repeated this feat with the Reds on August 18, 2019, striking out all six batters he faced. Currently a member of the Chicago Cubs as of August 2026, Gausman relies on a three-pitch mix: a 94.6 mph four-seam fastball, an 84–86 mph splitter, and an 80–84 mph slider. His ability to balance these tools has allowed him to lead the American League in strikeouts in 2023 and remain a premier power arm in the sport.
