In short: Founded in 1937, Key Food evolved from a local Brooklyn cooperative into a massive grocery network operating across nine states. Its journey includes rapid expansions, corporate acquisitions, and a series of unusual historical events, ranging from high-profile legal controversies to the mysterious disappearance of its former company president.

Key Food Stores Co-op, Inc. began in Brooklyn, New York, on April 20, 1937. Unlike traditional corporate chains, it functions as a cooperative of independently owned supermarkets. Over the decades, the organization expanded its footprint significantly, moving its headquarters to Matawan, New Jersey, and establishing a presence in states including Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and Florida. By 2015, the cooperative became the largest grocer in New York City after acquiring 23 stores from the bankrupt A&P chain.

The company's history is marked by periods of both growth and turbulence. In the 1980s, the firm faced legal challenges, including a 1984 price-fixing charge involving an affiliate, LAMM Food Corporation. The 1980s also saw a darker chapter: in November 1986, company president Camillo D'Urso vanished while fishing in Key Largo and was never recovered. Shortly thereafter, director Pasquale Conte was arrested for his role in a heroin smuggling operation linked to the Sicilian Mafia and an attempted murder, though the FBI found no direct link between his criminal activities and D'Urso's disappearance.

Operational shifts have defined the cooperative's modern era. In 2000, Key Food outsourced its distribution to Grocery Haulers, Inc., selling off its warehouses. The company has frequently utilized a multi-banner strategy, operating under names like Food Universe, SuperFresh, and The Food Emporium. In 2020, the cooperative entered a 10-year supply contract with UNFI, though this agreement was cancelled by mutual consent in 2025 after UNFI determined the partnership was not profitable. Today, the cooperative continues to manage a vast network of stores, reflecting its evolution from a local collective into a major regional player in the American grocery industry.
