In short: Once a vast municipal district larger than the province of Cavite, Kidapawan underwent decades of territorial partitioning to become the modern city it is today. Nestled at the foot of Mount Apo, this vibrant capital of Cotabato serves as a unique cultural crossroads for indigenous and settler populations alike.

Kidapawan, the capital of Cotabato, Philippines, has a history defined by its shifting borders and diverse heritage. Originally established as a municipal district in 1914 under American administration, the area was led by Datu Siawan Ingkal. By 1947, executive orders had expanded the territory to include vast, unexplored regions, making it more than three times its current size. At its peak in the 1950s, this Greater Kidapawan Area was described as being larger than the entire province of Cavite.

The city's modern form emerged through a series of partitions between 1951 and 1963, which carved out neighboring municipalities like M'lang, Makilala, Matalam, and Magpet. Despite local opposition to these losses, the city eventually secured its status as the provincial capital in 1973 under Presidential Decree No. 341. It officially achieved cityhood in 1998 through Republic Act No. 8500, becoming a first-income-class city by 2025 with a population of 160,864.

Beyond its administrative evolution, Kidapawan remains a significant cultural melting pot. It is the ancestral home of the Obo Monuvu people, who maintained autonomy throughout the Spanish colonial period. Today, the city reflects a blend of indigenous roots and migration, with Cebuanos, Ilonggos, and other groups contributing to its linguistic and social fabric. Situated at the base of Mount Apo, the country's highest peak, the city serves as a vital economic and political hub, positioned strategically between major Mindanaoan urban centers.
