Kinder Scout: The gritstone plateau that transformed British access to the countryside
In short: Rising above the Derbyshire landscape, Kinder Scout is more than a challenging moorland trek. It is a site of historic activism, where a 1932 mass trespass secured public access rights. Today, this gritstone plateau remains a vital, evolving habitat undergoing significant restoration to protect its fragile peatlands.
Kinder Scout is a prominent moorland plateau in the Peak District, serving as a landmark for hikers and conservationists alike. The area is defined by its rugged gritstone edges, such as the Wool Packs and the Pagoda, which create an otherworldly atmosphere for those traversing the Pennine Way. The landscape is deeply tied to the history of public access; in 1932, over 500 people participated in a mass trespass from Hayfield to Kinder Scout, a pivotal event that helped establish the right to roam on open country.
The plateau is currently managed by the National Trust, which is actively working to restore the high moorland. Historically, the area served as a trade route for lead, coal, salt, and wool, with packhorse tracks like Jacob's Ladder facilitating movement across the terrain until the arrival of the railway in 1894. Today, the focus has shifted toward environmental recovery. Gully blocking on the plateau is helping to stabilize eroded peat, creating the wet conditions necessary for mosses and cotton grass to flourish once more.
Conservation efforts extend to the clough woodlands, where the National Trust aims to increase native tree cover by protecting seedlings from grazing animals. This long-term vision for the High Peak moors is designed to unfold over the next 50 years. For visitors, the plateau offers a 7.5-mile circular walk starting from Edale train station, providing sweeping views of the Vale of Edale and the historic dry-stone walls that delineate the valley floor below.
