In short: Located in the Persian Gulf, this elliptical island functions as a special economic zone where standard Iranian laws are notably relaxed. With its tropical climate, massive shopping malls, and international sports events, the island serves as a strategic commercial hub designed to rival regional centers like Dubai and Doha.

Kish Island, a 91-square-kilometre territory off the southern coast of Iran, has undergone a radical transformation since the 1970s. Initially identified as a potential resort destination during the reign of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the island was formally designated as a special industrial trade zone in 1989. The establishment of the Kish Free Trade Organisation in 1992 accelerated this development, leading to significant infrastructure investment aimed at positioning the island as a premier tourist and commercial center. By 2009, the zone's annual foreign trade reached approximately $9.2 billion, accounting for 15% of all imports into Iran.

The island's appeal lies in its unique regulatory environment. Within the Kish Free Zone, legal restrictions are far more lenient than on the mainland, fostering a climate that encourages both domestic tourism and international investment. This strategy includes the creation of specialized financial institutions, such as the International Oil Bourse, which opened in 2008, and the Kish Stock Exchange, inaugurated in 2010. To support this growth, the government has invested heavily in education and transport, including plans to expand Kish International Airport into the second-largest in the country, capable of handling 4.5 million passengers annually.

Beyond its economic ambitions, Kish is a site of deep historical and environmental interest. Ancient records date back to 325 BC, when Alexander the Great’s admiral Nearchus first documented the island. Today, visitors can explore the 8th-century city of Harireh or the underground city of Kariz, a massive 10,000-square-meter aqueduct system built 16 meters below ground. The island also features diverse attractions like the 70-hectare Dolphin Park and the Mica Mall, one of the largest commercial projects in the region. Despite its modern focus, the island remains a place of mystery, marked by unresolved international incidents and the enduring wreck of the 1943 cargo ship, the Koula F.
