In short: Built in the mid-1990s to replace aging grounds, this West Yorkshire venue has hosted everything from Rugby World Cup matches to major international concerts. While it serves as a shared home for local sports, its ownership and naming rights have shifted significantly over three decades of operation.

The stadium, officially known as Kirklees Stadium, was conceived in August 1992 to provide a modern base for Huddersfield Town and the Huddersfield Giants. Construction, managed by Alfred McAlpine and designed by Populous, cost approximately £40 million. The project was completed for the 1994–95 season, allowing both clubs to depart their historic homes at Leeds Road and Fartown. Interestingly, the original development plans included an ambitious proposal for a ski slope located next to the facility.

Architecturally, the stadium features four distinct stands. The Kilner Bank Stand is uniquely integrated into the hillside behind it, while the Riverside Stand houses the primary club facilities, including changing rooms and administrative offices. The North Stand, completed in 1998, features a flexible lower tier that can be adjusted for non-sporting events like concerts. Since its opening, the venue has hosted diverse international fixtures, including Rugby League World Cup matches and rugby union qualifiers, where teams like England and New Zealand once surpassed 100 points in single games.

The stadium's ownership structure has evolved from a tripartite consortium involving the local council and both sports clubs to a sole ownership model. As of September 2025, Huddersfield Town Football Club holds full control of the site under a 300-year lease. The venue has also undergone several rebrandings due to sponsorship agreements, moving from Alfred McAlpine to Galpharm, John Smith's Brewery, and most recently, Accu. Despite its history, the Huddersfield Giants plan to relocate to Dewsbury after the 2026 season, citing concerns regarding the atmosphere within the ground.
