From a Texas wedding to three Grammy-winning global harmonies
In short: Kirstin Maldonado didn't just find success in a cappella; she built it through a childhood spent in local theater and a full-ride scholarship. Her journey from a five-year-old with a dream to a global star with over 2 billion YouTube views illustrates the power of community and persistence.
Born in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1992, Kirstin Taylor Maldonado’s musical path began with a childhood ambition. At just five years old, she first expressed a desire to sing, but it was her performance at her mother's wedding at age eight that prompted her mother to enroll her in formal voice lessons. This early start was bolstered by her involvement in local theater productions, where she first met Mitch Grassi. These community roots provided the foundation for her eventual transition into the professional spotlight.
Maldonado’s path to stardom was paved by high school connections. While attending Martin High School, she met Scott Hoying, and the three of them formed an a cappella trio that gained local attention for song covers. This group eventually evolved into Pentatonix. Maldonado’s academic journey also included a full-ride scholarship as a National Hispanic Scholar to the University of Oklahoma to study musical theatre.
Although she joined the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, she chose to leave her studies before completion to pursue the group's burgeoning career. The group's breakthrough came in 2011 when they won the third season of NBC's 'The Sing-Off.' Since then, Pentatonix has achieved massive commercial success, selling over six million albums and reaching 13 million YouTube subscribers. Maldonado has won three Grammy Awards, including a notable 2017 win for 'Jolene' featuring Dolly Parton. Beyond her group work, she has pursued a solo career under the name Kirstin™, debuted on Broadway in 2018 in 'Kinky Boots,' and recently married filmmaker Ben Hausdorff in 2024.
