In short: In the Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan, the ruins of Kuldhara stand as a silent monument to a vanished community. Once a prosperous home to Paliwal Brahmins, the village was abandoned by the early 19th century, leaving behind a mystery of shifting populations, legends of curses, and possible seismic destruction.

The decline of Kuldhara was likely a gradual process rather than a single event. Historical records suggest a steady exodus: while the population was estimated at roughly 1,588 during the 17th and 18th centuries, by 1815, British officer James Tod recorded only 800 residents. By 1890, the village had dwindled to just 37 people. While local legends claim the inhabitants fled overnight to escape the atrocities of the Jaisalmer minister Salim Singh, evidence suggests environmental pressures played a significant role. By 1815, most village wells had dried up, and by 1850, only the step-well and two deep wells remained functional.

The cause of the abandonment remains a subject of scholarly debate. A 2017 study published in Current Science by A. B. Roy et al. proposes that an earthquake may have destroyed the village. The researchers noted that the ruins of houses in Kuldhara and neighboring villages like Khabha show collapsed roofs, pillars, and lintels that cannot be explained by simple weathering. This theory is supported by evidence of recent tectonic activity and ground movements along regional faults.

Beyond the scientific theories, Kuldhara has become a site of significant folklore. Many believe the departing Paliwals placed a curse on the land, preventing anyone from re-occupying it. This reputation has turned the site into a notable tourist destination, despite its reputation as a haunted location. The village ruins, which include the remains of 410 buildings, once featured a sophisticated infrastructure, including a 2.5 km² khareen for agriculture and a community centered around a mother goddess temple.
