Kuala Lumpur International Airport: A massive, high-tech hub built on former agricultural land.
In short: Spanning 100 square kilometres, Kuala Lumpur International Airport is one of the world's largest airport sites. Designed by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa, this regional megahub serves as a critical gateway for Malaysia, featuring the world's tallest air traffic control tower and a complex, high-speed baggage handling system.
Inaugurated on 27 June 1998, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) was conceived under the Multimedia Super Corridor development plan to replace the aging Subang International Airport. The project transformed 100 square kilometres of former agricultural land into a massive aviation facility. Its infrastructure includes three parallel runways, each exceeding 3,800 metres in length, and three air traffic control towers. Notably, the 133.8-metre Tower West stands as the tallest air traffic control tower globally, surpassing those at Suvarnabhumi and King Abdulaziz airports.
The airport's operational history has been marked by both ambition and significant technical hurdles. Its 1998 opening was plagued by failures in baggage handling and aerobridge systems, leading to severe delays. While these early issues were addressed, the baggage system required ongoing investment, including a 2019 upgrade to the high-speed VarioTray system. Today, the airport is divided into two main terminals, KLIA Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and serves as a primary hub for carriers like Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia.
Despite its status as a regional megahub, KLIA has faced fluctuating traffic due to global economic crises and pandemics, as well as competition from Singapore’s Changi Airport. Nevertheless, it remains a vital national installation. In 2024, it was ranked by OAG as the world's second most connected airport, boasting over 33,000 possible connections. With a long-term development plan aiming for a capacity of 100 million passengers per year, the airport continues to evolve as a central node in the Asia-Pacific aviation network.
