In short: Kurt Suzuki's path from the beaches of Maui to the pinnacle of baseball is defined by historic milestones. Beyond his own career achievements, he has become a symbol of Hawaiian sports legacy and a dedicated philanthropist supporting medical research.

Born in Wailuku, Hawaii, Kurt Suzuki grew up in Maui as a fourth-generation Japanese American. His journey to the Major Leagues began at Henry Perrine Baldwin High School, where he mentored under scout Walter Isamu Komatsubara. After winning the 2004 College World Series with Cal State Fullerton—a victory secured by his two-out RBI single against the Texas Longhorns—he was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the second round of the 2004 MLB draft.

Suzuki's professional career spanned several organizations, including the Athletics, Nationals, Twins, Braves, and Angels. While representing the Washington Nationals, he achieved a milestone on 23 October 2019 by becoming the initial player from Hawaii to strike a home run during the World Series. That same year, he caught for the team as they secured their first championship, earning him his first World Series ring.

Beyond the diamond, Suzuki has leveraged his platform for significant charitable work. The Kurt Suzuki Family Foundation was established by him and Renee in 2012. The nonprofit focuses on supporting scientific research into kidney diseases and chronic illnesses. This commitment to service complements his transition from a decorated catcher—winning both the Johnny Bench Award and the first-ever Brooks Wallace Award in 2004—to his current role as manager for the Los Angeles Angels.

Suzuki officially retired following the 2021 season, making his final appearance on October 4, 2021, against his original team, the Oakland Athletics. He moved into a leadership role as a special assistant to the general manager before being named the field manager for the Angels in October 2025.
