The rapper Eminem ranked among the greatest of all time.
In short: In the high-stakes world of hip-hop, few names carry as much weight as the legends who defined the genre. While many know Kurupt for his ties to Death Row Records, his technical skill has earned him a spot on the elite lists of the industry's most formidable lyricists.
Kurupt's journey into the mainstream began with a legendary 1991 rap battle at The Roxy Theatre. After outperforming everyone in a showcase, he caught the attention of Snoop Doggy Dogg. The two engaged in an intense 15–20 minute battle where, despite neither gaining a definitive ground, they established a foundation of mutual respect. This encounter served as the catalyst for Kurupt joining Dr. Dre and Suge Knight's fledgling Death Row Records in 1992. Throughout his career, Kurupt has navigated complex industry dynamics, including the volatile East Coast–West Coast rivalry of the mid-1990s. After leaving Death Row following 2Pac's 1996 murder, he signed with A&M Records and co-founded Antra Records. His career has been marked by both prolific collaborations—forming groups like Tha Dogg Pound and The Hrsmn—and public feuds, most notably a long-standing conflict with Daz Dillinger that saw the two artists repeatedly bash each other on records before eventually reconciling in 2005. Despite the turbulence of the industry, Kurupt's technical prowess has been validated by the genre's heavyweights. During 2013, Kurupt was named by Kendrick Lamar as a primary inspiration, together with Ice Cube and 2Pac. Furthermore, Eminem explicitly placed Kurupt on his personal list of the best rappers of all time, ranking him alongside icons like Jay-Z and Nas. These accolades underscore a legacy built on lyrical mastery that transcends the commercial highs and lows of his discography.
