The heavy price of a perfect record: Lachie Neale's 320-game streak

In short: In professional sports, a clean disciplinary record is the ultimate badge of honor. For Lachie Neale, it became a legal shield. When a late-career strike threatened to derail a historic premiership run, his three decades of perfect conduct were used to overturn a suspension and secure a third consecutive title.

Lachie Neale's career is defined by a rare intersection of individual accolades and team success. A dual Brownlow Medallist (2020, 2023), he has won four Merrett–Murray Medals and four All-Australian selections. His journey to the top was not immediate; after being drafted by Fremantle in 2011, he faced early criticism from coach Ross Lyon, who suggested Neale lacked long-term potential unless he significantly improved his work rate and weight.

Neale's transformation culminated in a dominant era with the Brisbane Lions. As co-captain from 2023 to 2025, he led the club to back-to-back premierships in 2024 and 2025. However, his leadership was complicated by personal upheaval. In January 2026, amidst a public marriage breakdown and allegations of infidelity, Neale stood down as co-captain, offering a public apology for letting his family down.

The most striking moment of his career occurred during the 2026 finals campaign. After striking Jack Ginnivan, Neale was issued a one-match suspension. The Lions appealed to the Appeal's Board, who overturned the ban. The ruling cited Neale's exemplary record of 320 games without a single suspension as 'exceptional and compelling circumstances.' This technicality allowed him to play in the 2026 Grand Final, where he defeated his former club, Fremantle, to secure his third consecutive premiership.
