In short: In 1926, Walter Morgan established a secluded desert retreat for Hollywood’s elite. Today, La Quinta has transformed from a part-time community into a thriving California city, shaped by shifting river courses, massive population growth, and a climate that can exceed 120 degrees.

Long before the arrival of socialites, the Cahuilla Indians inhabited this region of the Coachella Valley. The landscape itself has undergone profound geological shifts; as the valley floor sank, it was once covered by the Pacific Ocean. Centuries ago, the Colorado River changed its course, flooding the eastern valley and creating the freshwater Lake Cujuilla, a distinct body of water from the modern man-made reservoir.

The modern identity of La Quinta began to take shape in the 1920s. In 1926, Walter Morgan founded the La Quinta Resort, a destination that served as a sanctuary for celebrities and even hosted film legends like Frank Capra, who wrote the screenplay for 'Lost Horizon' there. The area's infrastructure expanded alongside the 1930s paving of State Route 111, eventually connecting the city to major highways like Interstate 10.

The city's rapid evolution is reflected in its census data. While the population was only about 4,200 during the 1980 census, it grew to 37,558 by 2020. This expansion led to its official incorporation in 1982. Today, the city is a diverse community with a median age of 51.8 years, characterized by a warm-to-hot climate where summer highs frequently surpass 108 degrees Fahrenheit.

Beyond its history as a resort, La Quinta serves as a significant regional hub. It is home to the first Wal-Mart Supercenter in California and features a commercial district known as The Village. The city's economy is supported by tourism, retail, and service industries, as well as a seasonal influx of 'snowbirds' who increase the local population by 20 to 50 percent during the cooler months.
