Three interconnected lakes nestled beneath the tallest peaks in all of Ireland
In short: The Lakes of Killarney form a stunning aquatic trio in County Kerry, cradled by the dramatic MacGillycuddy's Reeks. From the sprawling, island-dotted Lough Leane to the profound depths of Muckross Lake, these waters hold ancient secrets, ranging from prehistoric metalworking sites to the ruins of medieval monastic life.
Located within Killarney National Park, this system comprises Lough Leane, Muckross Lake, and the Upper Lake. These bodies of water sit in a valley roughly 20 metres above sea level, framed by rugged mountains including Carrauntoohil, which stands as the highest point in Ireland at 1,038 metres. The landscape is so striking that Queen Victoria’s ladies-in-waiting famously declared the view from a nearby vantage point—now known as Ladies View—to be the most beautiful in the country during her 1861 visit.
Each lake possesses a distinct character. Lough Leane, the northernmost and largest at 19 square kilometres, contains the historic Innisfallen Island, home to the remnants of an ancient abbey. Its eastern shore features Ross Castle, a 15th-century fortification, and the Ross Island peninsula, which served as a hub for some of the earliest metallurgical activity in prehistoric Ireland. South of this, Muckross Lake—also called Middle Lake—is separated from its neighbour by a stone bridge and holds the title of Ireland's deepest lake, plunging to 75 metres.
The southernmost Upper Lake is the smallest of the group, connected to the others by a winding four-kilometre channel. Beyond their physical geography, the lakes are steeped in local legend. Folklore tells of Kate Kearney, an ill-fated figure said to have wandered the shores in search of an enchanted chieftain named O'Donaghue. Her story inspired 19th-century literary works by Letitia Elizabeth Landon, ensuring the lakes remained as much a fixture of the romantic imagination as they are of the Irish landscape.
