In short: Lalduhoma is a rare political figure who has been disqualified from both national and state legislatures for violating India's anti-defection laws. From his early days as an undercover officer dismantling drug gangs to his current role as Chief Minister of Mizoram, his career is defined by unconventional, high-stakes maneuvers.

Born in 1949, Lalduhoma began his career in the Indian Police Service. He gained significant attention for his undercover work in Goa, where he infiltrated a major drug syndicate, rose to a leadership position, and ultimately dismantled the entire organization. This success caught the eye of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, leading to his appointment as her security chief in 1982. Encouraged by the Gandhi family to enter politics, he resigned from the police to help negotiate an end to the Mizo National Front insurgency, a conflict that had destabilized Mizoram since 1966.

Lalduhoma's political journey has been marked by a unique relationship with India's Anti-Defection Law, which was introduced via the 1985 Fifty-Second Amendment. In 1988, he became the first Member of Parliament in India to be disqualified under this law after leaving the Indian National Congress. He defended the move, claiming his departure was necessary to accelerate the peace process in his home state. His efforts eventually contributed to the 1986 Mizoram Peace Accord, which ended the insurgency.

Decades later, in 2020, he made history again as the first state legislator in India to be disqualified under the same law. Having been elected as an independent candidate in 2018, he was removed from the Mizoram Legislative Assembly for serving as the leader of the Zoram People's Movement. Despite this setback, he won his seat back in a 2021 by-election. In 2023, his party secured a landslide victory, and he was sworn in as the 6th Chief Minister of Mizoram, pledging to prioritize the state's farmers and fiscal health.
