A cinematic disaster turned into a social message of harmony
In short: When 21 days of footage vanished during post-production, the film Lal Salaam faced a crisis. Despite a box-office failure and mixed reviews, its narrative of religious coexistence in a village called Murabad sparked a conversation about humanity over division.
Directed by Aishwarya Rajinikanth and featuring an extended cameo by superstar Rajinikanth as Moideen Bhai, Lal Salaam is a Tamil-language sports drama. The story centers on the village of Murabad, where Hindus and Muslims live in harmony until a competitive cricket match between two local teams—3 Stars (Muslim) and MCC (Hindu)—ignites a violent conflict. This friction escalates when a protagonist named Thiru injures the hand of Shamsuddin, a talented player from Bombay, leading to a cycle of retaliation orchestrated by various village figures.
The production faced significant technical hurdles. Principal photography took place between March and August 2023 across Chennai, Mumbai, and Pondicherry. However, during post-production, a hard disk containing 21 days of footage went missing. Unable to reshoot all the scenes, the team included only a few recovered segments in the theatrical release on February 9, 2024. This resulted in a box-office performance of ₹19 crore against an estimated budget of ₹80–90 crore.
Critics were divided on the film's execution. While some praised its noble social message and Rajinikanth’s willingness to shed his star image for progressive politics, others criticized it as a 'noble message churning machine' that lacked cinematic nuance or novelty. The narrative eventually concludes with the Muslim community assisting the Hindu community during a festival, aiming to restore village harmony. An extended version released in June 2025 incorporated rediscovered footage and received a more positive reception from viewers.
A technological breakthrough occurred within the movie as 'Thimiri Yezhuda' became India's inaugural track to employ artificial intelligence for mimicking a departed vocalist.
