In short: The Colony of Vancouver Island saw its initial English family migration occur during 1851. Today, Langford is one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities, balancing its history as a Victorian recreation destination with rapid modern urbanization and unique Mediterranean ecosystems.

Langford's roots are tied to the Hudson's Bay Company. In 1851, Captain Edward Langford established one of four company farms in the Victoria area, managing the Esquimalt farm for the Puget Sound Agricultural Company. By the early 1860s, the region saw a brief gold rush near what is now Goldstream Provincial Park. During the late 1800s, it became a premier getaway for thousands of Victorians who traveled by railway to stay at the Goldstream House Hotel or socialize at Langford Lake.

The city underwent significant administrative shifts, incorporating as a district in 1992 before becoming a city in 2003. It now serves as the urban core of the West Shore region. Its growth has been explosive; between 2016 and 2021, the population surged by 31.8%, reaching 46,584 residents. This rapid expansion is driven by a strong real estate market and affordability, attracting people from across British Columbia, Ontario, and Alberta.

This growth poses a challenge to the local environment. While the area features prominent lakes like Glen and Florence Lake, much of its old-growth forestland is threatened by urban sprawl. Only about five percent of the unique Garry oak meadows and arbutus groves—ecosystems supported by the island's Mediterranean climate—remain in their natural state. Despite these pressures, Langford remains a hub for recreation, hosting the headquarters of Rugby Canada and serving as a gateway to the Trans-Canada Highway.

The city’s infrastructure reflects its importance as a regional center. It houses the central BC Ambulance 911 call centre, providing dispatch services for Vancouver Island. Educationally, it is a primary hub for School District 62 Sooke, which serves over 12,900 students across several municipalities.
