In short: Larchmont, New York, is a wealthy suburb with a history rooted in colonial land deals and a peculiar horticultural solution. Its name does not come from a local forest, but from a specific set of trees imported to solve a dust problem at a 19th-century estate.

The land that became Larchmont was originally inhabited by the Siwanoy people before being explored by the Dutch in 1614. In 1661, English merchant John Richbell secured the area through a trade of goods, though the purchase was initially contested by Thomas Revell. Richbell eventually received a formal land patent in 1662, and after Great Britain took control of the colonies, he obtained an English title in 1668. By 1722, the Palmer family had acquired full title to the land, which included the area now known as the Incorporated Village of Larchmont.

The village's name originated at the Manor House, built in 1797 by Peter Jay Munro, the nephew and adopted son of Supreme Court Chief Justice John Jay. Munro’s home faced the Boston Post Road, which was notoriously dusty during the summer. To mitigate this nuisance, his gardener imported a fast-growing species of larch trees from Scotland. These trees were planted along the front of the property, eventually providing the village with its enduring name. Munro, a lawyer who worked with Aaron Burr, was also a prominent abolitionist who helped found the New York State Manumission Society.

In the late 19th century, the estate was purchased by Thompson J.S. Flint, who formed the Larchmont Manor Company and began developing the land. The arrival of the New York & New Haven Railroad transformed the area from farmland into a popular summer resort for wealthy New Yorkers. By 1891, residents incorporated the village to secure municipal services like sewage and police protection. Today, Larchmont is recognized as a prominent suburb, having transitioned from a seasonal retreat into a year-round community for commuters, with a 2020 population of 6,630 residents.
