The Georgia city that stood against secession, then lost half its wealth
In short: In the 1860s, Lawrenceville was a rare pocket of dissent in the Deep South. While many neighbors embraced the Confederacy, this Gwinnett County seat voted against secession. Yet, despite its initial resistance, the town was eventually drawn into the conflict, facing raids and devastating economic loss.
During the American Civil War, Lawrenceville and Gwinnett County occupied a unique position. Unlike much of the surrounding region, the county voted against secession, driven in part by a demographic structure where the ratio of white residents to enslaved people was four to one. This resistance was led by three delegates sent from the county seat to represent their opposition to leaving the Union.
However, the town's neutrality was short-lived. As the war progressed, Lawrenceville rallied to support the Confederate cause. The local economy, heavily reliant on cotton farming, saw the rise of the Lawrenceville Manufacturing Company in the 1850s. This mill became a vital industrial hub, producing essential textiles and uniforms for the Confederate army.
The conflict eventually brought violence to the town's doorstep. While Lawrenceville escaped direct battlefield clashes, it was targeted by Union raids during General Sherman's March to the Sea. The destruction was profound: Union soldiers set fire to the Lawrenceville Manufacturing Company, a blow that crippled the local commercial infrastructure. By the war's conclusion, the economic toll was staggering, with the city losing approximately half of its total wealth.
Today, the city has transitioned from a war-torn agricultural hub to a modern suburban center. Located about 30 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta, it serves as a regional hub for healthcare and government. The historic square, which saw its first permanent brick courthouse built between 1823 and 1824, remains a focal point of the community's identity.
