In short: In 1954, a covert Israeli plot to sabotage Western property in Egypt backfired spectacularly. Known as the Lavon Affair, the failed operation aimed to frame local extremists to prevent a British military withdrawal. The resulting scandal triggered a political earthquake, forcing a defense minister to resign and destabilizing the nation's leadership.

The operation, later dubbed the Lavon Affair, was designed to damage Egypt’s reputation in the United States and Britain. Israeli agents were tasked with planting bombs at U.S. and British facilities in Egypt, intending to blame the attacks on local groups like the Muslim Brotherhood. The ultimate goal was to create enough instability to convince the British government to maintain its military presence in the Suez Canal zone, a move Israel feared would embolden Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser.

The plan collapsed when Egyptian authorities captured the operatives. In the aftermath, Pinhas Lavon, who served as Israel's minister of defense under Prime Minister Moshe Sharett, became the central figure of the ensuing political crisis. Although Lavon was cleared of direct involvement by three separate inquiries, the scandal effectively ended his career. He was forced to resign from his government post in February 1955, though he initially returned to his role as secretary-general of the Histadrut, the powerful General Federation of Labour.

The affair continued to haunt Israeli politics for years. In 1961, Lavon accused military officers appointed by David Ben-Gurion of framing him for the failed plot. Ben-Gurion, who had returned to the premiership, refused to authorize a new inquiry into the allegations. This refusal led to a major rift within the Mapai party, eventually prompting Ben-Gurion to resign from office and form a new opposition party, Rafi, in 1965. The incident remains a defining example of how a single failed covert operation can reshape a country's internal political landscape for decades.
