In short: Legends Tower is a planned 134-story skyscraper in Oklahoma City designed to reach 1,907 feet. If completed, it would become the tallest building in the United States and the Western Hemisphere. The ambitious project faces significant hurdles, including regulatory reviews, economic skepticism, and concerns regarding its impact on local aviation.

The Legends Tower is the centerpiece of a larger mixed-use development known as The Boardwalk at Bricktown. Developed by Matteson Capital and the architecture firm AO, the building's height is a symbolic reference to 1907, the year Oklahoma was admitted as the 46th U.S. state. Initial plans proposed in 2023 suggested a height of 1,750 feet, but this was later revised upward to 1,907 feet. The structure is intended to house a 350-key Hyatt hotel, 1,776 residential apartments, and 110,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, topped by an observation deck.

The project has encountered substantial scrutiny. Critics, including economist Jason Barr, have labeled the tower an unprecedented outlier, arguing that its scale is disproportionate to the city's current population and lack of urban density. Further concerns involve the practical challenges of building such a structure in a region prone to tornadoes, as well as potential interference with air traffic patterns near Tinker Air Force Base. Despite these obstacles, the Oklahoma City Council voted 8–1 in June 2024 to approve the necessary rezoning, though the project remains subject to ongoing reviews by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Financial and logistical timelines have fluctuated throughout the development process. While Matteson Capital announced $1.5 billion in secured financing in March 2024, subsequent reports indicated that construction faced delays, with further funding milestones of $700 million mentioned by July 2025. The development plan also includes a lagoon, parking facilities, and a new arena for the Oklahoma City Thunder. Whether the tower will ultimately rise remains a subject of public debate, with local leadership maintaining a neutral stance on the feasibility of such a massive private investment.
