In short: Leonid Nevzlin rose from a programming engineer in the Soviet era to become a central figure in the Russian oil industry. His trajectory, marked by immense wealth and high-level political influence, eventually collided with the Kremlin, leading to his exile in Israel and a life defined by international legal battles.

Born in Moscow in 1959, Nevzlin began his professional life in 1981 as a software engineer at a foreign trade firm. His career shifted dramatically in 1987 when he joined the Center for Scientific and Technical Creativity for Youth, where he established a long-term partnership with Mikhail Khodorkovsky. This association became the foundation for their involvement in the Menatep bank and the subsequent acquisition of the Yukos oil company, which transformed them into prominent figures in the Russian business landscape.

By the late 1990s, Nevzlin held significant influence, serving as a vice president at Yukos and briefly representing the Republic of Mordovia in the Russian Federation Council. However, the political climate shifted during the presidency of Vladimir Putin. In 2003, as authorities launched investigations into Yukos and its leadership, Nevzlin resigned his government position and moved to Israel. The Russian state later accused him of serious crimes, including conspiracy to commit murder, and sentenced him to life imprisonment in absentia in 2008.

Nevzlin has consistently maintained that the charges against him were politically motivated, a perspective supported by international observers who viewed the prosecution of Yukos executives as a campaign to seize assets and suppress opposition. In 2008, the Israeli Supreme Court found no evidence to support the Russian extradition requests, and in 2014, the Permanent Court of Arbitration ruled that the Russian government had engaged in a systematic effort to dismantle Yukos. Today, Nevzlin remains in Israel, where he is involved in media ownership and academic philanthropy, including the establishment of a research center at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem dedicated to the study of Eastern European Jewry.
