Lewistown, Montana, sits at the exact geographic center of the Treasure State
In short: Nestled in the foothills of the Big Snowy Mountains, this city serves as the county seat of Fergus County. Once a gold rush boomtown and a vital railway hub, it now guards a unique piece of military history while maintaining its roots as a center for Métis culture and community.
Established in 1879 by Métis settlers including Pierre Berger, Lewistown was named after Fort Lewis, a military outpost built in 1874 to protect travelers on the Carroll Trail. The city's development was accelerated by an 1880s gold rush in the nearby Judith Mountains, which brought a influx of miners who eventually settled permanently in the area. By 1899, the community had grown enough to incorporate as a city.
The city's strategic importance evolved significantly during the 20th century. Between 1895 and 1903, the Montana Railroad was constructed, connecting Lewistown to the national railway network at Lombard, Montana. Later, during World War II, the US Army Air Corps established a training base for B-17 Flying Fortress crews. Today, the site of that former airbase operates as the Lewistown Municipal Airport, which houses the last remaining storage facility for the Norden bombsight, a device once kept under tight security to prevent theft by enemy spies.
Physically, the city occupies 5.32 square miles in the heart of Montana. Its water supply is drawn from Big Spring Creek, which originates six miles south in the Big Snowy Mountains. The climate is defined as humid continental, characterized by cold winters and warm summers, though the region is frequently tempered by chinook winds. These winds can cause dramatic temperature shifts, occasionally bringing mild weather even in the depths of winter.
Modern Lewistown maintains a population of 5,952, according to the 2020 census. The city is governed by a seven-member commission and a city manager. Beyond its administrative functions, it hosts several cultural traditions, including the Montana Cowboy Poetry Gathering, which is the second oldest of its kind in the United States, and the annual Metis Celebration, which honors the heritage of the city's founders.
