In short: Lesser Poland Voivodeship is a southern Polish province defined by its dramatic geography and deep history. It houses the nation's oldest university, the only desert in Poland, and the highest concentration of UNESCO World Heritage sites in the country, all while maintaining a powerhouse economy centered in the historic capital, Kraków.

Lesser Poland Voivodeship, established in its current form on January 1, 1999, covers 15,108 square kilometers. While its name evokes the ancient, much larger Małopolska region, the modern province is a concentrated hub of cultural and economic activity. It is bounded by the Świętokrzyskie Mountains to the north and the Tatra, Pieniny, and Beskidy ranges to the south. This varied landscape includes the Błędów Desert, the only desert in Poland, and makes the region the warmest in the country, with Tarnów holding the title of the hottest city year-round.

The region’s history is inseparable from Kraków, which served as the capital of Poland from 1038. The city is home to the Jagiellonian University, founded in 1364, which counts Nicolaus Copernicus and Pope John Paul II among its alumni. Today, the voivodeship balances this rich heritage with a modern, dynamic economy. It is one of Poland's wealthiest regions, contributing 8.1% of the national economic output as of 2018. Industries range from high technology and banking to the massive Tadeusz Sendzimir Steelworks, which employs 17,500 people.

The province is also a site of profound historical memory. It contains six UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the Wieliczka salt mines and the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial, which draws a million visitors annually. The region's cultural identity is further expressed through its traditional cuisine, such as Oscypek cheese, and a fierce sporting culture, exemplified by the 'Holy War' derby between Kraków football clubs Cracovia and Wisła Kraków. Despite its modern administrative structure, the region remains a vital intersection of Poland's past and its industrial future.
