Born at the end of Dune Messiah to Paul Atreides and Chani, Leto II faced a choice his father had declined: to embrace the full, crushing weight of prescience. To secure the 'Golden Path'—a future ensuring humanity's survival—Leto underwent a radical biological merger. By consuming massive amounts of spice, he allowed sandtrout to cover his body, creating a living, self-repairing membrane that functioned as a powerful exoskeleton. This process required immense mental discipline to prevent the spice from killing him. He achieved this union by carefully adjusting his enzyme levels to facilitate the merger.
This transformation made him nearly invulnerable to physical damage, though he remained fatally vulnerable to water. For 3,509 years, Leto II ruled as a god-emperor, maintaining 'Leto's peace' through a period of extreme human quiescence. By enforcing a stagnant, repressive order, he intended to create a deep, urgent need within humanity to explode outward and scatter across the universe, making them impossible for any single tyrant to control again. His all-female Fish Speaker army maintained order throughout this era. This period of stability was known as Leto's peace.
His reign was not without internal conflict. He spent millennia breeding for a specific genetic trait: individuals invisible to prescient vision. This trait was eventually realized in Siona Atreides, whose ability to remain uncontainable by vision provided the means for the revolution Leto secretly desired. His rule ended when a lasgun blast destroyed a bridge, dropping him into the Idaho River; the water decomposed his sandworm body, releasing sandtrout that carried pearls of his consciousness to restart the sandworm cycle. The revolution was aided by Siona's partner, Duncan Idaho, a constant companion. This uprising finally fulfilled the emperor's long-term strategic goal.
