The ecological transformation of Arrakis is forcing a migration from sietches to cities
In short: Nine years after Paul Atreides vanished into the desert, the planet Dune is changing. As the climate becomes less arid, the Fremen are abandoning their hidden sietches for permanent villages and cities, bringing profound shifts to their ancient way of life.
The ecological shift on Arrakis is driven by a massive terraforming effort. This transformation has reached a point where some Fremen no longer require stillsuits to survive the less arid climate. As the desert becomes more hospitable, the traditional Fremen way of life is eroding, replaced by the emergence of new villages and cities. This environmental transition is a central conflict, as the potential loss of sandworms could end the production of spice. The twins, Leto II and Ghanima, are the heirs to Paul's prescient visions, having been awakened in the womb by the spice.
This migration is accompanied by a surge in pilgrimage. As the planet's environment stabilizes, more travelers arrive to experience the world of Muad'Dib. However, this period of change is fraught with political and religious instability. The imperial high council has lost its political power and finds itself unable to control the widespread jihad. Amidst this influx of pilgrims, a new religious figure known as The Preacher has emerged in the desert. He actively rallies against the injustices of the religious government and the various changes affecting the Fremen.
The shift also brings existential threats to the planet's most vital resource. The ongoing terraforming of Dune threatens to kill all the sandworms, an event that would simultaneously destroy the source of the spice, melange. This ecological tension sits at the heart of the struggle between those seeking to preserve the old ways and those driving the planet's transformation. The political landscape is further complicated by Princess Wensicia of House Corrino, who plots from Salusa Secundus to assassinate the twins. Meanwhile, powerful factions like the Bene Gesserit, the Tleilaxu, and the Spacing Guild are all maneuvering to seize control of the spice.
