In short: In 2009, five members of the Lin family were murdered in their North Epping home. The investigation spanned years, involving forensic breakthroughs and multiple high-profile trials. The case eventually centered on a relative, revealing a motive rooted in personal resentment and a survivor who later became a prominent advocate.

On 18 July 2009, newsagent Min Lin, his wife Yun, their sons Henry and Terry, and Yun's sister Irene were found bludgeoned to death in their home. The scene showed no signs of forced entry, suggesting the killer possessed a key and intimate knowledge of the house layout. Investigators noted that the attacker avoided the room of Brenda Lin, the only immediate family member who survived, as she was away on a school trip in New Caledonia.

The investigation, known as Strike Force Norburn, eventually focused on Lian Bin 'Robert' Xie, the husband of Min Lin's sister, Kathy. Forensic evidence became the cornerstone of the prosecution's case. Investigators discovered that Xie had disposed of an ASICS sneaker box, and DNA analysis of a stain found in his garage—identified as 'stain 91'—contained genetic material from four of the five victims. Prosecutors argued that Xie, a former ENT doctor in China who struggled after moving to Australia, felt humiliated by his perceived loss of status compared to his successful in-laws.

The legal proceedings were protracted. After several trials, including one that ended in a hung jury, a final trial in 2016 resulted in a guilty verdict on 12 January 2017. Xie was sentenced to five consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole. Following the tragedy, Brenda Lin emerged as a significant figure in the recovery process for others, establishing The Survivor Network in 2021 to support victims of sexual abuse, a cause she continues to champion as an advocate.
