In short: In the vast Australian Outback, a routine roadside stop turned into a nightmare. A traveler was lured out of his van by a man claiming to see sparks from the exhaust. What followed was a violent crime that baffled police for years, leaving behind only a pool of blood and a survivor's harrowing tale.

The 2001 murder of British tourist Peter Falconio began with a calculated deception. While travelling in an orange Kombi camper van, Falconio and his girlfriend, Joanne Lees, were approached by a man in a white Toyota 4WD. The assailant claimed to see sparks from the exhaust; when Falconio stepped out, the gunman brandished a silver handgun, assaulted Lees, and attempted to kidnap her. Lees escaped into the bush, where she remained hidden for hours before being rescued by a road train driver.

The investigation faced hurdles as Falconio's body was never found, leading to initial scepticism regarding Lees' account. However, forensic persistence and a tip-off from a drug-running accomplice led to a breakthrough. In 2002, James Hepi revealed that Bradley John Murdoch had behaved suspiciously. DNA evidence eventually linked Murdoch to the crime scene. In 2005, Murdoch was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.
