In short: In 2016, the Indian cellular market underwent a seismic shift. The arrival of Jio Platforms, offering free data and voice, ignited a fierce price war that fundamentally altered the landscape, leading to rapid market consolidation and the disappearance of several long-standing operators.

The Indian telecommunications landscape has undergone intense transformation over the last decade. A pivotal moment arrived in 2016 with the launch of Jio Platforms. By offering free data and voice services during its inaugural year, the company triggered a period of aggressive price competition. This shift was so significant that Jio successfully amassed over 80 million subscribers, fundamentally changing market dynamics.

This era of competition also brought about significant structural changes among established players. Airtel India's 15-year period of market dominance ended in 2018, following the union of major telecom players Vodafone India and Idea Cellular. The industry has since seen significant consolidation; as of late September 2026, 17 mobile operators had ceased operations in the country. Among the defunct, MTNL holds the distinction of being the longest-operating operator to go out of business, having also served as India's first mobile operator.

Today, the scale of connectivity in India is immense. According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), wireless subscribers reached approximately 1,312.25 million by August 2026. The broadband sector is similarly vast, with total subscribers reaching 1,101.21 million as of the same month. This total is comprised of 1,052.58 million wireless broadband users and 48.63 million wireline broadband users. While the market is massive, it is highly concentrated, with the top five broadband providers controlling 98.58% of the market share.
