From foster care to the captain's armband of a Premier League club
In short: Lloyd Kelly’s rise in professional football is defined by a stark contrast between his early life and elite success. After spending twelve years in the foster care system, he ascended to become a defensive anchor for AFC Bournemouth and eventually joined Juventus.
Born on October 6, 1998, Lloyd Kelly's path to professional sports was shaped by significant early adversity. For a period of twelve years, Kelly lived within the foster care system with his brothers and sisters starting at age six. Despite these challenging beginnings, he began his football journey with local side Bristol Central before being spotted by Bristol City at just 12 years old.
Kelly’s progression through the English leagues was marked by steady growth and leadership. He debuted for Bristol City in August 2017 and eventually moved to AFC Bournemouth in May 2019 for a reported fee of £13 million. During the 2021–22 season, Kelly took on a pivotal role as captain in the absence of Steve Cook. His leadership was instrumental during an unbeaten start to the campaign that lasted 14 games, equaling a club record dating back to 1961.
His career reached new heights with moves to Newcastle United and eventually Juventus. In February 2025, he joined the Italian giants on loan before a permanent transfer was confirmed in May 2025 for €17.5 million plus performance-based add-ons. By September 2025, Kelly had already made an impact on the European stage, scoring his first UEFA Champions League goal in a stoppage-time equalizer during a 4–4 draw against Borussia Dortmund.
Beyond club success, Kelly represented England at various youth levels, including the U20 and Under-21 sides. His recognition as a top talent was solidified by being named to the EFL Championship Team of the Season and the PFA Team of the Year for the 2021–22 campaign.
